Annual CPD Requirements
All practicing registered nurses (RNs) and enrolled nurses (ENs) must complete a minimum of 20 CPD hours each registration year (ending May 31). The learning activities must be directly relevant to your specific context of practice.
Interactive Learning Requirements
Out of the 20 minimum annual CPD hours, a minimum of 5 hours must be interactive CPD completed with other practitioners (either face-to-face or via virtual interactive platforms).
Additional Endorsement Requirements
Nurses who hold an endorsement for scheduled medicines or hold an endorsement as a nurse practitioner must complete an additional 10 hours of CPD per year in relation to each specific endorsement. Dual registrants (Nurse and Midwife) must complete 20 hours for each profession (totaling 40 hours), though overlapping relevant topics may count toward both.
Eligible CPD Activities
CPD must be relevant to your context of practice, seek to improve health outcomes, and draw on the best available research evidence. Eligible activities include postgraduate studies, clinical workshops, online interactive e-learning modules, conferences/seminars, journal clubs, in-service education, or authoring peer-reviewed research papers.
It is up to the professional to determine whether the activity qualifies as eligible towards their CPD requirements based on self-reflection and identified learning gaps.
Course / Provider Accreditation
The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia does not formally accredit or pre-approve specific CPD providers or individual courses. Registered nurses may complete relevant CPD from a range of providers, provided the activity aligns with the NMBA's CPD registration standards and the nurse retains appropriate proof. Reporting, Record-Keeping & Audit
Nurses must declare compliance with CPD standards annually during their registration renewal by May 31.
